Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin stated he is pulling out from the Irish presidential election immediately.

He was set to be among three contenders standing for the role of Irish president, beside TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys.

Nonetheless, late Sunday he said via a statement that he "erred that was not in keeping with my character and his personal standards."

"After weighing these points, I have decided to leave the presidential election contest right away and return to the arms of my family," he stated via a statement.

Additional details to come.
