Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Claim First Wins After Recent Arrests

NBA game action

Miami put up eighty-six opening half scores versus the Memphis Grizzlies

Miami Heat secured a crushing 146 to 114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA game since guard Rozier was arrested for alleged illegal sports betting.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was additionally arrested in connection with a broad federal probe into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.

But, the Heat were focused as they recorded eighty-six opening half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.

Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and later stated Terry had the team's full backing.

"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.

"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through this."

Portland also secured their first game since the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the team to a decisive 139-119 win against the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Recent Events

Speaking about the detentions for the first time, league head Silver stated he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

The commissioner also mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We investigated that situation and were open regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an charge.

"And two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
